Surfing Seaside Heights

I had the incredible opportunity to be at Casino Pier in Seaside Heights last week during an incredible session with some pro surfers (someone told me) and it was a beautiful evening. The waves were between 3-6 foot and it was so incredibly glassy. There were plenty of good surfers in the water and the waves just did not stop the entire time I was there.

This video is also avilable on JerseyTube.comif you’re interested in seeing this plus some other great local videos about the Jersey Shore and some surrounding New Jersey stuff.

Some of the waves rolling in actually got pretty big, and this time of year, when the waves hit the sand bars they tend to suck out creating a power surge in the wave which makes it envariably a do or die type of situation for surfers of any caliber.

At the Pier, waves tend to build up pretty close to the pilings and go left from there (our right - their left) so you’ll notice many of the surfers are surfing with their backs to the waves, traditionally called going backside, with an occasion right from time to time.

You’ll also notice some surfers taking off on lefts with their right foot forwardm, these are known as goofy foot surfers, much like to ’south paw’ term used for lefties, goofy foot surfers are the minority and are fighting for equal rights in a world dominated by left foot front surfers.

All in all, as the sun slowly set behind me, and the waves, so perfectly peeling in tubular formation in front of my, I can honestly say that although I wasn’t in the water, I was having a truly spiritual moment.

Seaside Heights St. Patrick’s Day Parade

Seaside Heights St. Patrick’s Day Parade

Every year Seaside Heights and Seaside Park get together to host the annual St Patrick’s Day Parade that stats at the Tri-Boro First aid station on J street in Seaside Park and goes all the way up to the second to the last street at the north end of Seaside Heights. There are bands, dancers, bagpipes, floats, tanks, soilders, cops, clowns and much, much more!

For the 24 straight year, Seaside Heights and Seaside Park, New Jersey will be the focal point of everything Irish as the 2008 Ocean County Saint Patrick’s Day Parade kicks off on Saturday March 15th at noon from the staging point inside Seaside Park and marches north through Seaside Heights. “Groups are already calling in and reserving their spot in line” says Parade Coordinator, John Sweeney of Lavallette. “Not only is it a great day to celebrate, it’s also a great day to make the public aware of your business, or organization with a steadily growing number of spectators nearing 70,000 and increased media attention, as we near the 25 year mark.” he added.

Kevin Donahue and Tom King of Toms River, parade co-chairmen, said it takes more than 40 parade marshals to usher so grand an event down the main Boulevard of Seaside. “We have a great relationship with the Columbus Day folks and we help each other out” said Donahue. Adds King “The Parade keeps growing and to keep it under two hours takes organization so we could always use more parade marshals. Anyone interested should contact us.”

“This is a great way to spend the day at the Jersey Shore” says Ocean County Freeholder Director and Tourism Liaison Joe Vicari. “Not only is the parade Ocean County’s centerpiece for Irish celebration it’s the event that signals the start of spring and the summer tourism season. The event provides a great opportunity for spectators to make arrangements for their summer vacation accommodations as well.” Vicari said. “ It’s impressive to see Seaside Heights and Seaside Park cooperating for years to bring joy to so many people with a parade that’s been ranked in the top 200 events in the Nation.”

It was a crowd that could care less about the weather forecast. A large number of people turned out for the 24th Annual Seaside Heights Saint Patrick’s Day Parade on the Boulevard at Seaside Heights.

“We started getting phone calls on Tuesday about weather cancelations,” said Pat Sweeney, wife of parade coordinator John Sweeney, but the committee decided to take its chances and go ahead with the celebration anyway. Spectators showed up in festive green. And business along the Boulevard was brisk. Some business owners said the parade is the ‘kick-off’ day for the town’s tourist season.

The parade was organized by the boroughs of Seaside Park and Seaside Heights. In all, 25 parade marshalls assisted in this year’s parade, said Pat Sweeney, “trying to put it all together in two hours.” The event included 13 parade floats, 24 marching bands and 204 marching groups from various businesses and organizations, she said.

Sea Foam

Sea Foam is an occurance that everyone sees when they visit the New Jersye Shore. The question always arrises, where is it from, what causes it, why is it here.. even, is it polution or dirty?? All of these questions have there variable, yes and no are the answers. Because there are variables, we’ll go with the natural cuases, the tendancy for swirling tides and coliding swells and bodys of water at the suface of the ocean to create bubbles and splash against itsef hundreds of thousands of times. This creates a foam substance that sits on top of the water and when the wind is just right, is blown to the beach.

It often looks dirty because, along with the foam, there is a miriad of other things collected by the foam as it travels to the beach, some hundreds of miles in some cases, they become one with the foam, sort of a “CHI” if you will…

So, by the time it finally does reach reach the beach, yes, it’s probably pretty dirty, but only by ocean standards, the salt kills many of the germs and bactiria that cause bad breath, and 9- out of 10 doctors recomend sea foam over brushing!

So next time you’re at the beach the Jersey Shore, don’t start to wimper when you see the Sea Foam monster approaching the shoreline, no one likes a cry baby, instead, embrace the foam, become one with the foam, you can even jump in and plash around until your little hearts contented.
